The Day Aarav Learned to Name His Feelings

Aarav is four.

One morning, he walked into school, threw his bag on the floor, and refused to join circle time. His mother whispered, “He’s been very cranky lately.” In many classrooms, this would be called “misbehaviour.”

At Mini Mavericks, we call it communication. Instead of correcting him, his teacher sat beside him and said, “Your body looks upset. Is it angry or is it tired?” He paused. “Angry.” That moment — that single word — was learning.

Happiness Is Not Smiling All Day

When people hear “Happiness Curriculum,” they imagine laughter, celebrations, and cheerful posters. But real happiness is deeper. It is the ability to understand your feelings, regulate your emotions, and feel safe in your environment. Modern well-being science — including work from researchers at Harvard University and Yale University — shows that emotional regulation in early childhood shapes long-term resilience, academic success, and mental health. In the early years, the brain is building pathways for life. If we teach children to read before they can understand their emotions, we are building on unstable ground.

What Happened Next

Aarav was guided to the calm corner. He took three slow breaths. He chose to draw what made him angry. Ten minutes later, he joined the group. Nothing dramatic happened. No reward chart. No punishment. Just a child who felt understood. That is the Happiness Curriculum in action.

What It Really Means

It means:

• Teaching children to name emotions before correcting behaviour

• Practicing mindfulness before demanding focus

• Building empathy before enforcing discipline

• Creating psychological safety before chasing performance

Happiness is not constant excitement. It is emotional security. It is belonging. It is feeling safe enough to grow.

At Mini Mavericks, happiness is not an activity on the timetable. It is the foundation of the timetable. Because when a child learns to say, “I feel angry” instead of acting it out —that is education. 👉 Explore our nursery and preschool programs: https://www.minimavericksindia.com/portfolio
